monkeytyping.online simulates the typing tests employers use when hiring for office, data entry, legal, dispatch, transcription, reception, insurance and healthcare administration roles. Here is how a session works from start to finish.
1. Choose your test
Above the typing area are three menus. Job selects the type of work, for example Data Entry Clerk or Legal Secretary. Passage lets you pick a specific document from that job's library, grouped by category, or leave it on Random. Settings holds the duration (1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes), your target net WPM, your minimum accuracy, whether Backspace is allowed, and a plain text view.
Use the numbers from the job posting if it gives them. Government clerical tests, for example, often use a five-minute test with a minimum of 35 to 40 net WPM, while some legal offices ask for 60 WPM.
2. Read the briefing and begin
Before each test a short briefing lists the rules, as a real assessment would. Press Begin or Enter. The clock does not start until your first keystroke, so you can read the first line before you type.
3. Type the document
- Type exactly what you see. Capital letters, numbers and punctuation all count.
- Press Enter where a paragraph ends (shown with a return symbol).
- Correct characters turn bright, mistakes are underlined in red, and skipped characters are marked so you can see where you are.
- The page dims everything except the test while you type. Move the mouse to bring the controls back.
- Pasting is disabled. Strict mode also disables Backspace, as some employer tests do.
- If you reach the end of a document before time is up, the next document appears automatically.
4. Read your score report
When the time is up you get a report with a reference number, your net WPM and accuracy, and a clear result: Practice Target Met or Practice Target Not Met. If you exit early, the attempt is marked Assessment Incomplete and is not scored.
- Speed chart: hover to see your speed at any moment, and click a point to jump the replay there.
- Replay: watch your test back keystroke by keystroke at normal or faster speed.
- Mistake review: every word you got wrong, next to what you actually typed.
- Most missed keys, a full calculation breakdown, and Print report to save a PDF.
The full report with a free account
Everyone sees their net speed, accuracy and result. With a free account you also get the speed chart, the keystroke replay and the full analysis of every test, and every result is saved to your dashboard:
- Action plan: the three to five things costing you the most points, ranked, with a one-minute personal drill built from your own mistakes.
- Mistake patterns: every uncorrected error grouped by type, such as capitals, numbers, punctuation, spaces, neighbouring keys, swapped or missed letters, with examples and your most common mix-ups.
- Keyboard heatmap: mistakes and speed for every key, your weakest and slowest keys, and the load and error rate of each finger.
- Speed and rhythm: first-press accuracy, keystroke efficiency, rhythm consistency, pauses, slowest words and key pairs, and your pace at the start, middle and end of the test.
- Content types: accuracy and speed on names, numbers, codes and punctuation compared with plain words.
- Progress: how this result compares with your last attempt, your average and your best, plus a dashboard with your speed over time on every test.
The leaderboard
Every test you take while signed in is ranked on the public leaderboard. Each member is listed once per board with their best result of at least one minute that meets the minimum accuracy. Filter by job test, length and period to see who is number 1, 2 and 3, and where you stand. You can hide yourself in your profile at any time.
Form entry tests
Data entry roles are often tested by keying records into fields. In Form entry mode you see a paper-style source document and a set of fields. Results show field accuracy and records completed instead of WPM.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Enter: begin the test from the briefing, or start the next test from a report.
- Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on Mac): restart the current test.
- Esc, then Esc: end the test.
- Esc, then Tab: leave the typing area without ending the test.
Your data
Without an account, what you type is processed in your browser and is not sent to our server; only an anonymous score may be recorded. With an account, your results and the text you typed are saved so you can reopen every report, and you can download or delete them at any time. See the Privacy Policy for details.
